In recognition of the outstanding achievements and dedicated efforts of young people in the Niagara area, the Niagara Police Athletic League sponsors a program to honor the "Students of Excellence in Niagara" and their parents.

Graduating seniors at high schools throughout Niagara County are eligible for selection as a "Student of Excellence" with a selection based on:
  • Scholarship and/or academic achievement
  • School and/or community involvement
  • Character, integrity, and positive role modeling
Representatives from each school play the major role in selecting the students to receive the awards.

Format
The 11 high schools in Niagara County plus Grand Island, Cardinal O'Hara, and Tonawanda will each select three honorees, one from each category.
Participating schools:
  • Barker Central
  • Cardinal O'Hara
  • Grand Island
  • Lewiston Porter
  • Lockport
  • Newfane
  • Niagara Catholic
  • Niagara Wheatfield
  • Niagara Falls
  • North Tonawanda
  • Royalton-Hartland
  • Starpoint
  • Tonawanda
  • Wilson Central
The "Brain Swayze Students of Excellence in Niagara" program honors 42 students and their parents in salute of the "family team" effort.

Awards
Each student receives a certificate in recognition of their selection as a "Student of Excellence."  In addition, a program book is printed with a photograph and biographical sketch of each student.

The program book is financed by "patron" advertisers.  Additional corporate and business sponsors are recruited to cover additional dinner expenses, which include a complimentary dinner ticket for the students.

Program
In addition to honoring the students and saluting each school, a prominent educator/community leader from the Niagara area is asked to be the featured speaker and participate in the award presentations.
